About STUDIO JOOST VERMEULEN
Studio Joost Vermeulen (SJV) is an architectural design studio founded in Amsterdam in 1999. The studio creates distinctive spaces that balance past and present, combining architecture, interiors, materials, furniture and art.
Each project begins with its existing context. Rather than following a fixed style, SJV develops an individual concept around the architecture, the people who use the space and the way they want to live or work. Original details may be preserved and reinterpreted, while contemporary interventions introduce new materials, forms and functions.
The studio works across residential, retail and workplace projects, from initial concept and spatial planning through architectural detailing, material selection, custom furniture and implementation. SJV works closely with architects, artists, craftspeople, furniture makers and other specialists to translate ideas into reality.
About JOOST VERMEULEN
Joost Vermeulen is a Dutch architectural designer and founder of Studio Joost Vermeulen. His work is shaped by his Amsterdam background and years spent travelling and working internationally, with influences ranging from architecture and art to furniture, materials and landscapes. His approach moves naturally between architecture, interiors and furniture, combining creativity with practicality. His projects often bring together existing architecture and contemporary interventions, with an emphasis on how a space looks, feels and functions.
Joost has collaborated extensively with internationally renowned Dutch artist Jennifer Tee on art installations and exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. Their collaborations include projects for Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum, as well as the development of Tulip Tiles.
Before establishing his independent practice, Joost was a partner at ROAM Architects, collaborating with architect Bruce Kee on architectural and interior projects.
Joost studied Architectural Design for four years at St. Joost Academy of Art and Design, following earlier studies in business and a preparatory program at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Utrecht.
His work continues to move between architecture, interiors, furniture and art, with an emphasis on authenticity, proportion, materials and the character of each space.
